How it works

FAQ

Who Can Tutor?
Volunteer tutors must be at least 14 years old, and there is no age limit. Our tutors are high school students who want to become teachers or simply make a difference in a child’s life; college students; business professionals with full-time jobs; and retirees with grandchildren and a natural penchant for helping young students. If you wish to tutor more advanced subjects such as high school math or science, you must first pass a relevant skills proficiency test.
How Much Time Would I Have to Commit?
Tutors must commit to at least one 2-hour session each week for 8 weeks. We understand that circumstances may prevent tutors from making their scheduled commitments, but continuity with students is essential to their growth and success. Please speak with a supervisor about your time commitments.
Does it Matter When I Start?
We prefer that tutors start at the beginning of a semester or summer session and working until the end of the semester, but tutors are welcome to join us at any time.
How Many Students Would I Be Tutoring?
The tutor works with 1-2 children an hour during each hour of service.
Will I Receive On-going Support?
The tutor collaborates with the teaching staff to enhance daily literacy opportunities. Tutors in this position will work with other tutors and the site supervisor.
Do I Have To Assess the Students’ Skill Levels?
New tutors with little or no experience will not conduct assessments.
How Long Does a High School Subjects Proficiency Test Take?
A skills test for any given subject you wish to teach should take no more than 15-30 minutes to complete.
If I Already Have a Background Check, Can I Submit That?
Yes, so long as the background check is less than 12 months old and covers what we screen for.
